Stream and wetland restoration, in particular, require a comprehensive assessment of the upstream watershed to provide the context for a scientifically sound restoration strategy. Biological, physical habitat, and geomorphic assessments are all critical to characterizing current conditions, identifying key watershed features, and developing restoration goals. Geographic information system (GIS) tools are a valuable means to identify problem areas and target restoration efforts. Restoration plans consistent with ecological design principles must be tailored to the unique hydrology and geomorphology of a chosen site. Once a site has been restored, post-restoration monitoring is essential to evaluating project success. Barnegat Bay marsh site that was impacted by a former dredging operation. This site is being considered for possible restoration as part of the Barnegat Bay project. Versar has experience in all aspects of restoration, from developing recommendations to overseeing site plans and plantings. We design and carry out wetland restoration projects in freshwater and coastal ecosystems, when possible incorporating natural materials to stabilize sites until vegetation has established.
