The FIFE CD-ROM Series

All of the FIFE data plus many compressed satellite and aircraft images are available on CD-ROM from the Oak Ridge DAAC (NASA Archive). The 5-volume CD-ROM set contains over 100 data sets, thousands of image products, and TIFF images of the experiment site in Kansas. This is a good integrated data set for climatology modelling.

FIFE CD-ROM Volume 1 (Data Disk)

This CD-ROM holds the final integrated collection of the FIFE data released by the FIFE Information System for general use. It contains the data 83 data sets from the FIFE data base, extracted as ASCII files, with one file containing one day's worth of data at a single site. This amounts to over 47,000 files of data on this CD-ROM. All of these data sets are completely documented in a standardized fashion. Each of the data sets has been placed in a group of associated data sets. Each of the 12 data groups has a summary document describing the data sets, how they are related, and listing reliability and known shortcomings of the data sets. There are also about 20 "grab-bag" data sets with varying degrees of documentation. FIFE CD-ROM Volume 2 (Image Disk)

This CD-ROM holds four different satellite data sets acquired over the period of February 1987 through October 1989. The specific coverages for each data set are given in the following table. The processing level "Browse" means that the images are sub-samples of the original larger images. Note: All image data files are in a compressed format.

This CD-ROM holds 14 aircraft-based ASAS (Advanced Solid-state Array Spectrometer) image data sets and 18 aircraft-based PBMR (Push Broom Microwave Radiometer) soil moisture image data sets acquired during 1987 and 1989. FIFE CD-ROM Volume 5 (Image Disk)

This CD-ROM holds derived aircraft and satellite image products, geographic information system (GIS) sorts of raster images, and digitized pictures of various FIFE sites. The aircraft data consists of Level-2 atmospherically corrected Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) images from the NS001 instrument and Level-3 MAMS (Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor) images. The satellite data consists of Level-3 greenness and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) images from the Landsat TM (Thematic Mapper) instrument, Level-3 NDVI images from SPOT, Level-2 insolation and PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) images from the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite). The set of composite Level-3 gridded arrays of soil moisture data cover periods of IFC 1, IFC 2, and IFC 5. The GIS images contain information on terrain features, anthropogenic features, geology, soils, burn treatments, woody vegetation surveys, and site locations. The digitized site photographs contain TIFF images of sites, instruments, maps, and figures.
