What is FIFE?

The FIFE (First ISLSCP Field Experiment) Project was a local-scale climatology project set in the prairies of central Kansas during 1987-1989. It was designed to study the flows of heat and moisture between the land surface and the atmosphere over a region 15x15 km in size. To achieve this objective, satellite overpasses were coordinated with aircraft and ground data collection over the same area at the same time. The monitoring data are continuous through the three-year study period, while intensive coordinated field campaigns were conducted in 1987 and 1989.

FIFE Data Groups

All of the FIFE data are organized into data sets. Data sets generally include parameters and associated variables that have been collected with similar methods for similar objectives. They are usually taken under the direction of the same person or group. Each of the data sets has been placed in a group of associated data sets. Each of the 12 data groups has a summary document describing the data sets, how they are related, and listing reliability and known shortcomings of the data sets.

A general overview of the data sets compiled during FIFE is available on the Data Group Page. Detailed summary documents are available for each of the data set groups compiled, individually, as listed below.

The FIFE CD-ROM Series

All of the FIFE data listed above, plus many compressed satellite and aircraft images, are available on CD-ROM from NASA's EOSDIS archive at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The 5-volume CD-ROM set contains over 100 data sets, thousands of image products, and photographic documentation (TIFF images) of the experiment site in Kansas, along with extensive documentation of the project and data.

An upgrade to the Macintosh version of the CD-ROM Interface is available. This version (1.1) supercedes the version supplied on Volume 1 of the CD-ROM series. You may download the bin-hexed self-extracting file by clicking on the "Download" link below. Your browser may recognize the .HQX extension and automatically decompress the file, or you may need to unbinhex the file manually and then double click on it to expand it. With some browsers (e.g. MOSAIC), you may have to select the "Load To Disk" menu option before downloading.
